Spanish ski resorts 'increasingly accessible'

Spain's reputation as a destination for skiing holidays is growing among British tourists, it has been claimed.

Ski resorts in Spain have long been overshadowed by the country's status as a leading destination for beach holidays but its mountainous regions are now starting to fight back, the Independent reports.

According to the newspaper, a fresh marketing campaign has recently boosted interest in Spanish ski resorts among UK travel agents.

Several major ski tour operators now offer trips to Formigal, a destination located in the Spanish section of the Pyrenees which contains the country's largest skiing area.

In addition, the resort of Sierra Nevada - located in the mountains above Grenada - is increasingly accessible to holidaymakers and property owners in southern Spain.

The Independent reports that Spain is also beginning to compete, in terms of price and quality, with the nearby specialist ski destination of Andorra.

Recent data from the Civil Aviation Authority revealed that Spain is one of the most popular destinations at UK airports for VFR traffic - people travelling to visit friends and relatives.
