'Strong growth' recorded in eastern Europe

Many eastern European economies are continuing to experience strong growth, new figures have revealed.

Officials in Romania revealed that during the third quarter of 2007, its economy had expanded by 5.7 per cent on the previous year.

Meanwhile, strong rates of growth were also recorded in neighbouring countries, such as Poland and Slovakia.

Commenting on the figures, Lars Christensen of Denmark's Danske Bank said that although the rate of increase had been affected by factors such as the global credit crunch, this has not resulted in a slowdown.

Speaking to MarketWatch, he said: "All 3 countries still continue to have quite strong growth driven by domestic demand."

Romania became a full member of the European Union earlier this year.

According to a recent report by the Rompres news agency, the country's construction sector is growing at a faster rate than in any other EU nation.
