Surge in holiday bookings expected today

Today is set to be the most popular day to book a summer holiday, experts have predicted.

The Association of British Travel Agents and the Identity and Passport Service stated that many people were beginning their first full week back at work following the Christmas break.

However, the organisations stated that the reality of returning to work would lead to some considering different means of escape, such as booking a holiday.

Home Office minister Meg Hillier commented: "With Christmas festivities at an end, it's the natural time to start looking ahead and planning your summer break."

Up to 500,000 people are expected to book their summer breaks today, although the government has advised travellers to make sure their passports are up to date.

Meanwhile, the Times has highlighted a number of possible destinations for British tourists to consider.

The newspaper recommended countries such as Morocco, France, Italy and Albania as good places to visit during 2008.
