Tourists go on cultural holidays

More and more holidaymakers are choosing to go on cultural holidays, new research has revealed.

According to the Association for Tourism and Leisure Education (Atlas), nearly one in three tourists visited places with historical or cultural attractions last year.

This is up from nearly one in five during 1997, reports Travel Daily News.

Although places such as Paris and Rome were highlighted as major hotspots for this group, less established locations in eastern Europe were found to be attracting more and more attention.

For example, the Romanian city of Sibui saw a surge in visitor numbers due to its status as European Capital of Culture in 2007.

Commenting on this trend, Atlas said: "Cultural tourism is growing in importance in the market mix of destinations worldwide."

This comes after low-cost airline Wizz Air revealed that the number of people booking flights to eastern Europe went up in 2007.

The carrier, which offers services to Romanian cities including Bucharest, is aiming to push annual passenger numbers over the 6 million mark this year.
