Turkey 'set for tourism boom'
An industry expert has suggested that the ongoing economic crisis could actually help Turkey to become one of Europe's busiest tourist destinations.
Speaking to the Turkish Daily News, Adnan Gunes of Swedish tour operator Kuoni said tourism officials should view the recent financial turmoil as an opportunity for Turkey.
This is because the country's reputation as a cheaper alternative to traditional European destinations is appealing to holidaymakers in the wake of the credit crunch, he explained.
Mr Gunes added: "Tourists will now go to inexpensive countries
If Turkey makes a smart move right now
this crisis could work in its favour."
He said that a growing number of British tourists, as well as people from Germany and Scandinavia, will choose Turkey as their holiday destination for 2009.
Ibrahim Acar, director of the Antalya Culture and Tourism Directorate, has revealed that the Turkish region experienced an annual increase of 19 per cent in visitor numbers this year.
