Turkey 'to become a leading holiday destination

Turkey could become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, according to a local official.

Volvan Simsek, chairman of the Professional Hotel Managers Association, said the country's tourist sector had a huge capacity for growth and had "tremendous potential".

Speaking to Today's Zaman, he added that it had the ability to become one of the world's top five holiday destinations, both financially and in terms of visitor numbers.

Mr Simsek commented: "It is a must to realise this potential.

"Turkey has the ability to earn $40 billion a year from tourism, almost twice what it's making currently."

Significant growth in the tourist sector could also prove to be highly lucrative for overseas property investors in Turkey, particularly owners of rental accommodation in popular holiday spots.

This comes after culture and tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay told the newspaper that returning holidaymakers could be able to boost visitor numbers in the country by speaking of their positive experiences in Turkey to friends and relatives.
