Turkey's tourism ambitions 'are not a fantasy'

Ambitions to boost tourism in Turkey are not beyond the realms of possibility, a leading official has stated.

Basaran Ulosoy, chairman of the Turkish Association of Travel Agents, backed calls to try to attract 50 million visitors a year to the country by 2023.

Speaking to Today's Zaman, he said that boosting revenues from the holiday industry to £25 billion by this time was also a realistic target.

He commented: "Tourism has the power to unite everyone within it.

"We are one of the few countries that can host Germans and Russians or Israelis and Egyptians in the same hotel without any problems."

Mr Ulosoy added that boosting tourism across the country could also encourage more Turkish nationals to travel to different areas.

He stated that foreign people should not be the only ones who get to experience Turkey.

The comments come after Ismet Yilmaz, undersecretary of the tourism and culture ministry, told the newspaper that offering a wider variety of leisure attractions would enable the country to attract more visitors.
