Turkish airports record increases in passenger numbers
The number of passengers flowing through Turkey's airports last year increased by 7.3% on 2008, reports the Hurriyet Daily News.
Figures released from the country's official airport authority revealed a significant growth in passenger numbers, despite the global recession. In total over 85 million people used an airport in Turkey in 2009.
British airlines also saw growth in the number of passengers travelling from the UK to Turkey. Monarch recorded a 200% increase in demand for its Turkish holidays and has joined the low-cost airline easyJet in upping its number of services in the country next summer.
The growth was driven in part by a huge increase in the number of passengers at the Sabiha Gokcen airport on the Asian side of Istanbul. Bloomberg reported a 48% increase which makes the airport the 3rd largest in the country.
Istanbul's Atatürk Airport recorded a much lower level of growth at 4.2%.
There was a slight dip in passenger numbers at the airport in the tourist destination of Antalya, according to the newspaper.
