Turkish government aims to boost tourism
Officials in Turkey are aiming to attract millions of additional holidaymakers to the country, it has been reported.
Culture and tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay was quoted by the Turkish Daily News as saying that he wanted to attract 40 million visitors a year.
He stated that this could be achieved by promoting the country more heavily in major consumer bases such as Japan, China and the US.
In addition, Mr Gunay said that other parts of the country had to be marketed as holiday destinations in order to draw people to different areas.
He commented: "We had hit 23 million tourists in 2007 and if we would like to attract about 40 million tourists to Turkey annually, then we have to open new tourism areas."
Mr Gunay highlighted Izmir and Mersin as two areas that should be attracting more visitors.
If the government is successful in attracting more holidaymakers to Turkey, this should have a significant impact on its rental market.
Earlier this month, the country was praised by BuyAssociation for offering cheaper properties than other Mediterranean markets such as Spain.
