Turkish tourism sector 'will remain strong'
The Turkish government has insisted that the tourism sector is capable of holding up in the face of the global financial crisis.
Culture and tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay said people across the world are continuing to take foreign holidays, despite the economic downturn, reports the Turkish Daily News.
He stated that Turkey is well-placed to benefit as consumers from other European countries in particular are tending to visit relatively close destinations.
"Turkey can turn the crisis into an opportunity if it promotes itself well internationally," he commented.
Mr Gunay added that the European country is planning to step up its overseas marketing efforts in the next year in order to highlight its diverse range of attractions.
This comes after figures from the Association of British Travel Agents revealed that the number of summer bookings for trips to Turkey went up by 20% this year.
