TV show property buyers offer advice on how not to renovate Spanish properties

A couple who are due to star in a new 10-part Channel 4 series have offered advice on renovating Spanish properties based on their own experiences.

Rocco Barker - former lead guitarist of Flesh for Lulu - and his partner Dawn Buckler will appear on A Place in the Sun: Costa Chaos from Friday, which documents the pair's efforts in renovating a house near Barcelona.

As well as cash problems, mortgaging issues, labour troubles and even dealing with a live-in builder, the couple told the Sunday Times that a united front is key to a successful project.

As Mr Barker remarked: "If it's a dream you have as a couple, make sure you're set on each other - you have such big decisions to make."

He added that if he had to do renovate again, setting a budget would be top of the agenda, as well as getting to grips with things like electrics and building foundations.

Mr Rocco concluded by saying that people should not be fooled into thinking that renovating property abroad is necessarily an easy process as some TV shows make out.

As well as Spain, France is also popular destination for British property investors looking to renovate old properties.
