UAE 'should expand budget sector'
Officials in the travel industry have called upon the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to expand its budget holiday sector.
According to the Association of British Travel Agents, the country risks losing tourists to cheaper alternatives if it does not offer more affordable options, reports the National.
Frances Tuke, spokesperson for the organisation, said the UAE is best known for offering 5-star luxury resorts, which means it could be too expensive for many credit crunch-hit Britons.
She commented: "There aren't a lot of options in the budget sector, which might cause a bit of a drop in the number of British tourists."
Ms Tuke added that there has been a significant decline in the number of bookings for traditional tourist hotspots this year.
This, she stated, is because people have opted to visit destinations which offer greater affordability and value for money.
The comments come after online travel agency Holidays-Direct said a trip abroad has become a necessity rather than a luxury for many people.
