UK company boosts local Moroccan economy
A global information technology company has provided a boost to the fortunes of the local economy in Casablanca, Morocco, by announcing the creation of a new service centre.
Atos Origin has revealed that it will expand its operations in Casashore, by Casablanca, to cater for French-speaking customers from various nations, with an investment of approximately MAD 50 million (£3 million).
The company hopes to employ around 250 people by the end of 2008 - a figure that will expand to 400 by late 2009.
Atos Origin's investment in the country is part of Morocco's emergence plan, which designed to attract large projects from overseas with a fast turnaround time, helping the economy to become one of the most competitive emerging economic zones in the world.
Luigi Giacalone, executive vice-president of Atos Origin's eastern Mediterranean and African markets, commented: "Casashore is a dedicated nearshore zone that plays a pivotal role in the development strategy of the Atos Origin Group, particularly for French-speaking countries."
"Atos Origin has been operating in Morocco since 2003, establishing a long-term relationship with local partners by tapping into the local pool of talent," he added.
Currently, the firm employs around 100 staff in Morocco. In 2005, Atos Origin was awarded the New Information Technology and Communication Trophy by the Moroccan state for its efforts in creating a payroll system for the treasury.
