UK government backs Turkey's EU bid

Turkey's bid to enter the European Union has received public backing from the British government.

Speaking at a press conference outlining the development of stronger links between Turkey and the UK, prime minister Gordon Brown said he was in favour of the country becoming a full member.

Mr Brown and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted many of the current ties between the two countries in various sectors, such as commerce and tourism.

Both leaders singled out the popularity of Turkey as a holiday destination among Britons, as well as the growing trend of people investing in its property market.

In addition, they called for stronger links in areas such as trade, education and security, in particular tackling global terrorism.

This comes after Andrea Sartori, spokesperson for accountancy firm KPMG, told Travel Daily News that Turkey was becoming a popular holiday destination because of the increased number of flights to the country.
