UK sees surge in holiday bookings
Consumers from the UK are rushing to book holidays after the recent spell of poor weather, according to one travel firm.
Directholidaybookings.co.uk said it has seen a surge in the number of bookings since the recent bank holiday weekend, during which the UK was hit by torrential rain and strong winds.
The website said long-haul destinations are proving to be particular popular with tourists, as they offer guaranteed sunshine.
Andrew Gibson, director of Directholidaybookings.co.uk, added that the current economic situation has also affected people's destination choices, as the pound is now at an all-time low against the euro.
He commented: "The cost of visiting traditional European locations such as France has significantly risen recently."
"We believe this has lead to an increasing number of British holidaymakers looking at cheaper deals in Turkey and Morocco."
Mr Gibson stated that the euro was worth 79p at the start of this week, which means Britons can see their money go further in alternative locations.
According to the CBI, consumer demand for trips to other countries has remained very strong.
