US and UK officials launch construction of major Bulgarian business park

The construction of a major new business park by Sofia Airport was launched earlier this week when John Beyrle, the US ambassador to Bulgaria, and British ambassador Jeremy Hill attended a ceremony to mark the start of the project.

Entitled the Sofia Airport Centre, the complex will be situated only a few hundred metres away from the airport and will be the first Bulgarian business park to be built to international standards.

The scheme is being backed by US-based real estate firm Tishman International and the first phase of the project should be complete by the end of 2008.

Boiko Borissov, the mayor of Sofia, was quoted by the Sofia Echo as saying that a permit would be issued within days for the construction of the Sofia Airport Centre, while adding that he hoped the project would help to bring Bulgaria's labour prices up to EU standards.

Last month, Julian Edwards, the general manager of Tishman Bulgaria explained that the country represents an excellent property investment destination.

"There exists considerable capital, which can be invested in well-built, well-rented and well-situated trade projects in the whole country," he remarked.
