US tourists 'opting for eastern Europe'

American tourists are increasingly choosing to take their holidays in eastern Europe, new figures have shown.

A representative of the American Automobile Association told Agence France Presse said that bookings from US holidaymakers in the region have increased by 55% this summer.

Mike Pina, spokesperson for the organisation, highlighted Romania as a particularly popular destination, as bookings increased seven-fold.

He attributed this to the strength of the dollar against the euro, as holidaymakers from the US were opting for destinations where their money would go further.

This could potentially boost the country's appeal among rental investors hoping to cash in on a surge in tourism.

Mr Pina said: "Reservations for eastern Europe have soared this year because Americans want more for their money."

He added that the region was also popular because many wanted to be the first among their peer group to visit previously overlooked countries.

According to World Investment Services, emerging markets in eastern Europe could be potentially lucrative for overseas property buyers.
