VFR traffic makes Spain an attractive property investment location
Air passengers travelling to meet friends and family are the drivers behind international passenger traffic growth, it has been revealed.
Research conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) found that 25% of international passengers at UK airports were travelling to meet friends and relatives, and could therefore be classed as VFR traffic.
Destinations most likely to be flown to and from include Spain, Poland, Germany and Italy - suggesting the former in particular would be an ideal location for overseas property investment.
"There are now many more passengers travelling to and from the UK to visit friends and relatives in Europe - the result of increased labour mobility, overseas study and home ownership abroad," commented Dr Harry Bush, CAA group director of economic regulation.
"This research shows the complementary impact of liberalisation of the aviation market, the subsequent expansion of no-frills carriers and changing social networks."
Passengers were increasingly likely to go on short-haul flights to EU countries from regional airports including Bristol International, East Midlands and Liverpool, the report also showed.
Last year, Bristol International Airport was the ninth-busiest in the UK.
