Visitors to Turkey soar
The Turkish Statistics Institute has reported a 7.1% rise in the numbers of foreign tourists visiting the country, compared with January 2006.
Around 714,000 visitors came to Turkey this January, compared to 667,000 who visited in the previous year.
German tourists were the most frequent visitors to Turkey, and Bulgarians, Russians, Georgians and Iranians were also charmed by the warm weather and exotic sights.
British tourists were the seventh most numerous visitors to the region, perhaps drawn like tourists from France and Germany by the favourable exchange rate.
Rail and sea transportation increased by about 20% in 2006, but tourists arriving by road fell by 0.2%.
News site www.Today'sZaman explained that while younger tourists were more likely to frequent the country during the warmer summer season, the mild winter attracted older and retired visitors.
The popularity of Turkey as a year-round tourism destination promises high rates of return for those investing in holiday letting properties.
